Hovi’s BACK! Jay Z is expected to drop his newest music video right before kickoff on Superbowl Sunday. The video is being taped this week in New York City (I’m so mad that I’m not there) and accompanying Jay will be the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Kynan John (Dope!)
The performance will last approximately two minutes just before kickoff at 6:28 p.m. on CBS. About 65 musicians from the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra and the Rutgers Sinfonia traveled to New York City Tuesday to film the piece.
Maestro Kynan Johns said the school was approached about the job about two weeks ago, likely because the composer of the piece had previously worked with the Rutgers marching band.
Johns’ musicians performed an adaptation of Jay-Z’s hit “Run This Town” that was orchestrated to include NFL and CBS themes.
“It’s a totally different part of the performing arts,” Johns said. “For classical musicians, it’s not really what we teach and not really what we do.”
Johns said he knew little about Jay-Z prior to the performance and went to Wikipedia to get an idea of the rapper’s accomplishments.
Melissa Healy, a flautist and doctoral student, knew exactly who Jay-Z was. She said it was an honor to work with a talented performer and artist like Jay-Z.
“There are a lot of people out there who are really good performers but are not actually that talented,” she said. “…To get to work with an artist of that caliber is rare.”
Johns likely won’t be seen in the video. The orchestra played without a conductor, and Jay-Z stood in Johns’ place for much of the shoot.
Healy said that arrangement is actually good practice for some of the younger musicians in the group, which included undergraduates and graduates, and even some non-music-majors.
