Sex Therapy: Are You For Real?

Posted on 01 Mar 2010 at 5:00am

For the past few months the media has been enjoying the downfall of Tiger Woods’ clean image. Many were stunned to find out that he had several sexual encounters with women other than his wife. A week ago Jim Remy, PGA president released a statement that reported Tiger would  conduct a live press conference regarding his involvement with various women, to only close, by informing the world that Woods has a problem and is currently seeing a Sex Therapist.

With that revelation, radio station phone lines were ringing off the hook and in-boxes flooded as people inquired what exactly was a “sex therapist’ and if it was even a valid position and option for Woods’ road to recovery.

For those who may or may not be familiar, a sex therapist is a professional who holds a degree in Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling or a Medical field. The term sex therapist is not a protected or regulated titled; therefore, anyone in the aforementioned professions can consider themselves a sex therapist. Though often sex therapist receive extensive trainings in areas that are not required of their regular curriculum.

Sex Therapy focuses on sexual issues and is normally solution focused.  The term “Solution Focused Therapy” simply means that a client will develop a clearly defined issue and their therapist will assist them in working on resolving that particular issue in reaching their goal. Sex Therapy is talk therapy and does not involve touching. Though the therapist may give couples and or individuals activities to try at home. Sex therapy by definition usually refers to a sexual dysfunction, though more recently we are starting to see people, like Tiger Woods, whom report they have a problem with an excessive sex drive and utilize sex therapy to address the issue.   Sessions of sex therapy are usually short and can last anywhere from two to three sessions to over a dozen depending on the individual need.

The American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapist (AASECT) and the American Board of Sexology are two recognized organizations where one could find licenses therapist within the United States.  If you find you are having difficulties with your sex life be open with your partner and communicate with them.  More than often the problem is communication and fear that one will be looked upon as nasty or different from normal people.  There is nothing wrong with asking for what you want. Take a risk and tap into your partner’s wild side, you just might enjoy it!  Just make sure you’re doing it with a healthy mind and once everyone is on the same page the possibilities are endless!

What’s Really Good?

Sports Ahead of Time

Seventy-three years ago a track and field athlete by the name of Jesse Owens set two world records (100 and 200 meter) and took home a total of four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Adding to Owens spectacular athletic performance is the fact that he outperformed the field in front of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Two years later Boxer Joe Louis or the “Brown Bomber” as he was known, knocked out German Boxing champ Max Schmelig in the first round of their match. Nine years later, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to take a swing in Major League Baseball.

Forty-five years after the Civil Rights Movement began, we have come so far as a nation to elect our first African-American President, Barack Obama. As a high schooler in Hawaii, he was a key reserve on the school’s championship basketball team. For decades, sports had been considered one of the great equalizers in society, one of the few activities that can bring a diverse group of people together. African-Americans have certainly made their impact over the years on and off the field. Legends like boxing great Muhammad Ali and football star Jim Brown often verbally voiced their political opinions while others chose to let their games speak alone.

Now in the year of 2010, black athletes continue to dominate in their respective sports. Tiger Woods, who is half black and Thai, will arguably go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, golfer in history and he is barely in his thirties (scandal aside). Sisters, no pun intended, Venus and Serena Williams continue to rule the tennis courts. The two all-time home run leaders in major league baseball history are Barry Bonds and Hank Aaron and thirty-two of the fifty greatest NBA players of all-time are black. While black athletes continue their dominance on the field, it is their ventures off the field that speaks volumes with endorsements, clothing lines and charities that profit millions of dollars annually.

Both of the Williams sisters have deals with shoe companies, but have also started their own companies. Venus is the CEO of her own interior design firm, V Starr Interiors and Serena has her own clothing line called Aneres. Michael Jordan whom many consider the greatest basketball player of all-time is also one of the most marketed sports figures in history, though Tiger Woods is hot on his heels.

When many people think of civil rights and overcoming there are a couple of moments that instantly come to mind such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech and President Barack Obama’s victory. Here’s one thing that many may not think of and is what’s really good. People like Jesse Owens, Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson help to lay the pavement for people like Dr. King, so that he could blaze the trail for those of us today like President Obama.
